Stephen King once said that he used his writing in the horror genre to confront his worst fears. His philosophy was to call them out, not hide from them. I decided to try this out and got one of my favorite science fiction stories out of it. It first appeared in Analog magazine and was later anthologized in a fantasy anthology from Questar, placed firmly in the midst of actual fantasy stories. Did writing "Hobbits" really help deal with a mother's fears? It did.
