In 2001, I won the Writers of the Future. Part of the prize was a workshop with Tim Powers. We were tasked to write a 24 hr story based upon a randomly assigned object (in my case a bench) and a random interview with a stranger on Hollywood Boulevard (mine had just been arrested for trying to bribe a police officer with donuts).
