From the author: Claire is a wooden automaton working in a dive bar. Today she gets to meet her sister for the first time. This originally appeared in the "The Internet is Where Robots Live Now" anthology

Claire’s skin was Lignum Vitae – a hard, honey-colored wood that was self-oiling, keeping the tiny articulations of her mouth and eyelids smooth. Her other joints were brass, of course, where brass would fit, but she wished that they weren’t because what worked to polish brass dulled the wood and what polished the wood dulled the brass and the constant mixing of products, no matter how carefully she tried not to overlap, resulted in a burn of sorts, a roughed-up strip along each seam.
