From the author: A child learns valuable lessons about art, self-confidence, and flying on a failed dental contest poster.


When I was eight years old I learned how to fly. I was walking home with my poster for dental health week. It had not placed in the contest. The humiliating honorable mention ribbon was in my backpack. I tried not to take the ribbon home, but the teacher stopped me at the door. Teachers were always rubbing things in like that.

I held the poster in front of me, not wanting to fold or damage it even though I hated it, because I had never yet willingly defaced art. The wind blew the top edge...
