“So you’re a spy,” Bill Anders said to his wife.

He was sitting in a small interview room in the safehouse outside of Houston. When he and Frank and Jim had finished their simulator training that night, a phalanx of Secret Service men in dark suits and sunglasses and coiled earpieces of translucent plastic had met them outside the simulator and walked the three astronauts to a van displaying a Phil’s Fine Plumbing logo on its side. Charlie Smith had been waiting for them there.
