From the author: On her way to one of the last outposts of civilization in the West, a trucker picks up an unusual hitchhiker.

A brown body riding on four long legs flashed across the highway in front of me. I yanked the wheel of my rig around, skidding into the shallow bar ditch on the side of the road. There are no deer in Kansas anymore, and definitely none on the road south out of El Dorado. I'd never seen one that wasn't stuffed, but I swear that's what I saw when she darted out into the road. I climbed down out of the cab of my truck to see if I'd hit whatever it was.
