Difficult News: Curious Fictions shutting its doors August 27

Dear Curious Fictions community,

I’m sorry to say that I’ve made the difficult decision to put Curious Fictions on indefinite hiatus.

As much as I love this site, the stories you’ve published, and the wonderful people I’ve met through it, keeping it going is no longer sustainable. The business had a little outside funding at first, but subscriptions and payments never got to the point of allowing the site to pay for itself, or to justify more funding.

For the last couple years I’ve run the site alone, keeping the code up to date, featuring stories, answering customer support emails, and handling bug reports — all while doing contract web design work on the side to keep the company solvent. It was probably never sustainable, but adding in having a baby during a pandemic with no childcare, and it became outright untenable.

It’s been a labor of love from the beginning, so it’s heartbreaking to let it go, but I feel very lucky to have had the chance to try to make this dream a reality, even if it didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped.

Consider Tuesday’s featured story by Vanessa Fogg, “Traces of Us,” to be our swan song. I couldn’t have asked for a better story to be the final feature. It’s beautiful and poignant and tragic and hopeful, all at once. And please consider sending her a tip, if you like it.

Subscriptions were billed for the last time on Tuesday, July 27, but tips and one-time payments will be available until the site closes on Friday, August 27.

I still think there’s something special here, and part of me imagines reinventing the business someday (for example, as a nonprofit dedicated to promoting short stories and underrepresented authors), but I’ll need to step back and do some serious regrouping first (and hopefully, a little bit of writing). If you’d like to be notified of any future developments, you can sign up here. You can also email hello@curiousfictions.com if you have any questions.

In the meantime, please consider reading and commenting and sending tips to any authors you’ve had your eye on over the next month. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for being a part of this experiment. Keep writing, and reading, and supporting each other.

Sincerely,

Tanya Breshears

Tanya, you have done a wonderful job on this site from the beginning. Your love for stories has given authors encouragement and given everybody lots of great stuff to read. Thank you for all you've done. If a future phoenix ever presents itself, I'll check it out. But for now, I hope you can rest easy knowing that you've helped brought a great deal of joy into the world.

This is terribly sad news, because what you've created here is wonderful. I hope that one day, in the not too distant future, you find a way to revive it and make it pay. Until then, thank you so much!

Thanks so much for the kind words, Stephen -- and thank you so much for being one of the earliest and longest-running authors on the site! I really enjoyed reading your work

Oops, I didn't realize the username field wasn't an email field, and it auto-filled my email address. Any way to edit that?

Tanya, thank you so much for shepherding this project along. It has been an integral part of my writer's rhythm for the nearly three years. I've loved the way the site looks and the opportunity it presented for stories to find a new audience. It's depressing to think how few people have a chance to discover a story that appeared in a print magazine months or years earlier that hasn't been reprinted in a collection or anthology that's currently available. Curious Fictions allowed me to annotate my correspondence with links to relevant stories or posts. It has been wonderful and will be missed.

Thank you for having given me the opportunity to have previously published fiction assembled here on such a well done site. I also appreciated this place as a fan of the many authors featured. Best, -Colt

Tanya, thank you for all you've done. I've loved having a platform to put up a lot of my stories together, and have been introduced to so many other writers (mostly better than myself) here.
