From the author: The story behind the story: "The Waterbug"

"The Waterbug" first appeared in the September 2014 issue of Triptych Tales, a short-lived but very worth publication that published stories that took place in our world but, as they said, "with a twist." Which is just the type of fiction that I both love to read and love to write.

The story behind the story: I, like the woman in the story, am a bit squeamish about bugs. Not ladybugs, or butterflies, or even ants or most other garden-variety insects. But should I come across a cockroach or a waterbug (and yes, I know that the large hard-backed insects that can infest New York City homes are not technically waterbugs), you will hear emerge from my throat a shriek not unlike the type Fay Wray was so good at in King Kong.

Finally, I decided it was time to admit to this particular neurosis -- and possibly come to terms with it -- by writing about it.

Thus, "The Waterbug."
