As Wise as Serpents

This was the first story I sold to F&Sf, back when we still had landline phones. I've made some very minor changes, but mostly left it as it originally appeared (if you don't remember Dan Quayle, or the halcyon days when we were scared he might become the dumbest POTUS ever, feel free to google him).

The story was inspired by a clip on Australia's MediaWatch and by reading pieces by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, then editor of F&Sf, in which she mentioned that she loved cats and had never been to Washington D.C. To misquote Douglas Adams, "The trick is to bash the ideas together, guys!"

I'll be posting the sequel next month.
