Born in California, raised in Nebraska, Maya’s fascination with speculative fiction dates from the night her dad let her stay up late to watch The Day the Earth Stood Still. Mom was furious. Dad was unrepentant. Maya slept with a nightlight until she was fifteen and developed a passion for things that came from outer space or went bump in the night. Maya started her writing career sketching science fiction comic books in the back row of her elementary school classroom. Since, her short fiction has been published in Analog, Amazing Stories, Century, Realms of Fantasy, Interzone, and Jim Baen’s Universe, and often anthologized. She’s also been a finalist for the John Campbell, BSFA, Crawford, and Sidewise awards. Her debut novel, THE MERI, was a Locus Magazine Best First Novel. She penned a series of Star Wars novels with Michael Reaves, including the New York Times Bestseller, STAR WARS LEGENDS: THE LAST JEDI. Her most recent novel is THE ANTIQUITIES HUNTER: A Gina Miyoko Mystery from Pegasus Crime, and marks her first steps into the world of detective fiction. Maya is a founding member of Book View Café (www.bookviewcafe.com) and lives in San Jose where she writes, performs, and records original and parody music with her husband Jeff. The duo have plumbed the depths of absurdity with a series of parody music videos, including the viral “Midichlorian Rhapsody”. The song is on their Grated Hits CD. The couple has also produced three musical children: Alex, Kristine, and Amanda. Links to websites: www.mayabohnhoff.com, www.jeffandmaya.com & www.bookviewcafe.com

This is another tale that appeared in Jim Baen's Universe. Most of the story was from a vivid dream that stopped just a few paragraphs shy of the end. It was as if the Writing Muses had designed a test in which I must choose whether the story I was telling was humor or horror. Me, being me, I opted for both. It's about an estate agent and a "haunted" house.

1211 AD: Their king dead, remnants of the royal household of Hang Zhou escape the Mongol invasion by fleeing in a tiny fleet of vessels. Led by the king's steward, Wei Li, they reach the shores of the New World where they integrate into the society of the coastal tribes. Almost 300 years later, a merchant named Cristobal Colonne (Christopher Columbus) comes to the New World. In this re-imagining of the "discovery" of the American continent, things turn out a bit differently than history records.

This story appeared in Jim Baen's Universe magazine and in Best of Jim Baen's Universe in 2006. It was inspired by the age-old questions that have stumped philosophers, academicians and rank and file humans for centuries: When you put two socks in the washer and only one comes out, where do the other socks go? Why is my wallet in the freezer? And who put an empty milk carton back in the fridge? Harry Ferguson, assistant DA, is not only plagued by such questions, he has a murder to solve.
